27 Club

This year in December, I will be turning 27 years old. It is the start of your Saturn Return for some but it is also when many tragic but amazing people died.

The 27 Club.
Yesterday Amy Winehouse died of an overdose. With this death, another magical glimmer is added to this list. My old "dreamy" manager Matt, posted this on his FB and I think that it speaks to what I feel and also did yesterday when I found out.

I actually have much love for many members of this list. I love Mia Zapata, I am from Seattle and when they found her killer I was so happy, I ate a cupcake. I couldn't stop talking about it for days.

Jean-Michel Basquiat even though he was more well known for his art was a brilliant musician.

Then there is always the Famous Five. Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix (From Seattle), Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain ( Also, from Seattle).

However, the FIRST! Original Member of this club.. is Robert Johnson.

I hope that I make it to 28.

That Makes Sense

Have you ever spent time thinking about things.. things that you learned about in school and then kinda took for granted? I have recently been dealing with the rehabilitation of the Hedgehog's Sense of Balance. He is doing A LOT better. Really the biggest concern for me was, "is he ever going to be able to run in his wheel again?!:(" You might ask why I worry about this, I know that he is alive and he is not walking around being derpy very much anymore, besides a slight head cock and now when he has to make a turn he doesn't just turn he just does a circle till he is at the right degree. However, he is a runner.. he loves his wheel. It is how you can tell your hedgehog is happy, they do what they love to do.. all the time. Well, Pinny loves to eat, sleep, poop, scratch at the bottom of his cage and RUN ON HIS WHEEL. So, you can imagine my sense of despair when he got sick and the possibility of him not being able to run on his wheel became a harsh reality for him and me. However, the other day he totally ran on his wheel.. and he did it again last night. This is good. :D

Having to deal with this, is making me very aware of senses. There are many senses beyond the base 5.

Proprioception: This sense gives you the ability to tell where your body parts are, relative to other body parts. Close your eyes and touch your nose. Did you jab your eye out? Did you not touch your nose.. but really picked our nose? Did you shove your finger in you bellybutton? No. That is why.

Chemoreceptors: These trigger an area of the medulla in the brain that is detects blood born hormones and drugs. This is the part of your brain that makes you puke. It is also the part of your brain that dictates heart rate, breathing and taste. In theory.. you can say that your heart beats because you can taste.

But then there are other senses that are a bit more profound or mystical.. self of unique identity. We are all special and different. However, humans for the most part, want to all look and act alike. I wish that we could start showing our uniqueness on a visual level.. like Whale Sharks. The article linked, is about Scientists have been able to start tracking whale sharks with star mapping software. This is because whale sharks have unique spot/star patterns on their backs much like each area of sky had different stars/spots in its regions. I do wish that someday, there is a way to uniquely identify each person on earth.. so that we can see what they are.. and they can show who they are. Much like having Cutie Marks..BRONIES REPRESENT!

Sense of Humor.. Sense of Accomplishment.. Sense of Pride.. Sense of Shame. I find that these sense tend to mean more than my ability to sense whether or not I am going to puke on you. A sense of humor is something that is subjective though.. what one person thinks is funny another person might find to be shameful..

Is this funny?

What about this?

I find them to be funny.. I am sure that there is someone out there who senses that they are shameful, or annoying.. they are wrong.. but you know.. senses and stuff.

I am also a big fan of a sense of wonder..

OMG WOW! How does that work! WOW! I mean.. if you were the ICP.. you would say it is a Miracle.. but yea.. it is science..

This is a better video about Miracles..

There is a theory that our memories are also tied to sense. With the most strongest one being tied to smell. However, I feel, in my personal experience.. sound and music does this for me more. I lost my virginity to this song..
It is however, a song that every time I listen to it I cry. These aren't tears of happiness or sadness.. or whatever.. this is just a song that makes people emotional. I was dinking around the internet and I found this version of the same song..

I didn't cry when I heard it but I did feel a sense of completion with that time in my life.

Well, that is all for now, I am going to go feel a sense of accomplishment, by playing Animal Crossing, eating pancakes and cuddling. :D

Happy Canada Day!

This last Friday (7/1/11) was my very first Canada Day as a "Canadian". It was great day for the most part. I went to a friend of mine and the husband's track meet. His name is Paul Little.. he is kinda a big deal when it comes to high jump.. at least in Canada..

This is video from him last year.

Here is him jumping over stuff on Friday. He didn't beat the record of 2.18 but he got to 2.10 which is good.

Then, later on in the day we went to the Canada Day Parade in Downtown Vancouver. It was really fun and great. At the then, everyone in who was watching the parade started following the last float down to the waterfront where they were eventually going to shoot off fireworks. I totally made my husband walk with everyone else.. Here are my shitty cell phone pictures.

Here is a link to someone who actually knows how to take pictures of things. Their pictures are better and show how cool it was.

We saw fireworks! That was really fun. However, coming home was like something out of a post prototypical survival game.. Lets see if we can make it to the SkyTrain station without being killed by the hordes.

We finally made it home and drank a Molson. It was good times.
:D

Hedgehog Update, Linkies, You Can't Take The Sky From Me

Pinny is doing ok.. not 100%, but better. He is walking around kinda derpy. We have another 10 days of medicine to give him and if he doesn't get better it is time to take him to a specialist.

Remember that photo I posted last blog entry? Well.. here is what happened right before the epic make-out happened!

Yesterday, the hubs and I went went to the BC Can't Stop The Serenity event. Which happens in different cities around the world to raise money for Equality Now which is a great charity that fights for women's rights around the world. Joss Whedon's mother was one of the founders. It was super fun, next year, totally working on a costume! Also, need to brush on my trivia.. and have lots of monies!

Also, it was held at the Museum of Vancouver/ H.R. MacMillan Space Centre in Vancouver.. which I would like to go back and see someday.. but the cool thing I want talk about was the bathroom. The ladies bathroom had old comics and news paper articles on the inside of the stalls. One of them was a panel that had an old-assed (1939) Prince Valiant! Another one I saw was an old article about how long and how to achieve the "Perfect Tan".. it offered up some great tips like slathering yourself in lard, butter, Crisco, olive and coconut oil.. and laying in full sun for 3-4 hours every day between 11am - 3pm. Being someone who is bonafide allergic to sun, I break out in hives, get really itchy and become all snotty in my face, I laughed! I also, read this cool article on Boing Boing that made me feel better about my choices to use sunscreen.

Another Firefly/Serenity note.. I found Jewel Staite's Food Blog!

So, with all of that excitement, I leave you with something that is not very Science Fictiony.. but sill none the less Science!

My older brother and I used to do really stupid shit like this.. and unfortunately.. I was usually the one who suffered the fate of the camera man in this one.

Oh My Lucky Stars! Riots! Derpy Hooves! Shaking Trees! Wobbly!

Good Morning Interwebs. Life is puttering along in an epic amble. Lets see.. uh..

I had a scare on Wednesday night.. I thought that my hedgehog Pinny (Pincushion Linus H.J.) had Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome, yes hedgehogs are so cute that even their terribly tragic medical conditions have cute names. It is like having Huntington's or MS but for hedgehogs :( We noticed that he was turning on his side a lot and when we took him out to ambulate, he was either side crawling or walking backwards in a circle to the left!

We had the talk.. and we are not the type of people to drag out a painful issue with our pets, so we made decision that if he did have the Wobbly, we were going to have him put down. There is a regimen that people put their hedgehogs on to prolong death.. but I have never been a fan of drawing out a long and painful ordeal just so the human can "feel better". Pinny has a rich and fulfilling life, filled with running on his wheel for hours at a time, eating all the kibbles and bugs he wants, sleeping most of the day and getting snuggles, why would I deny him running on his wheel just because I would not let go? Doesn't make sense. So, tearfully, the husband and I packed up our little man and took him to THE VET! We hadn't really looked into vets up in Burnaby.. and there isn't a really good exotic pet vet in Vancouver, that we can tell. However, we did some research and found a well liked, decently priced vet, that was Skytrainable.

The staff there were sweet and attentive and could totally see that I was about to collapse in a puddle on the floor if the news went south. We got him into the vet, I expressed my concerns and then the doctor saw him walk, looked at his eyes, looked in his ears, did a poking and a prodding.. said, I know that the worst case is WHS... but have you thought about the possibility of.. Inner Ear Infections?

I totally felt like a drama queen at that point! Why does the brain do that?! Why is it that I go for the WORST POSSIBLE CASE SCENARIO!? I mean.. I am not the only one who does this, whenever my dragon Zilly shows any sign of being not up to snuff.. ( and this happens quite a fair bit) the husband IMMEDIATELY! thinks that she has some rare reptile disease and that the universe is ending.. we then, take her to the vet.. and the vet says.. there is nothing wrong with her, she is just being a drama queen.. did you change something in her environment? Usually it is a minor change, like we have rearranged her living area and doesn't like the angle of the branch.

So, the doc gave us some antibiotics for our "Hedgigo" (you see what I did there?) issue. We have to take a syringe and fill it with a sweet milky liquid and then somehow make the hedgehog, who does not like being poked, take his medicine. I have perfected the roll him in a ball, then wrap the ball in a hedgehog blanket then, squirt medicine on his mouth method of administering medicine. After a few days, he has definitely improved! Instead of ambulating backwards and to the left, he does it forwards and to the right!

While the drama happened with the hedgie! Vancouver lost their shit over the Stanley Cup Finals.. and rioted. Yea.. it was pretty epic to watch. I have mixed emotions about this. I am from Seattle.. I was a high-schooler during the WTO riots. I broke my ankle the night before, so I watched most of it from the comfort of peoples couches while I ate ramen.. but when I see a "riot" I think that it looks more like 3-5 days of the downtown financial core looking like a DMZ. I was unimpressed.. but as the night went on, I started to actually feel scared, resentment, disdain, disappointment and in general embarrassment for the city and the assholes that were burning and looting it.

Some good things however, did come out of that night. A renewed since of civic responsibility happened. True Canadians, True Fans in hordes woke up early the next morning and went downtown in their hockey jersey's and cleaned up, boarded up and generally made amends for the jack asses the night before. Here is some interesting articles about the situation.

I think that this is my generations version of the Kiss Seen Around The World!

The Vancouver Riot Make Out!

There is also a huge social media out pour to find the douche canoes who destroyed downtown Vancouver.

Jurassic Park! CURSE YOUR SUDDEN BUT INEVITABLE BETRAYAL

I went to a showing of Jurassic Park, on Thursday, as a benefit to help a girl raise money to fight cancer. It was such a great time. The movie has stood up well story and SFX wise, but there are moments where you realize that HOLY SHIT! THIS MOVIE WAS MADE IN THE EARLY 90's!

Jeff Goldblum is Watching You Poop!

One of my bestest friends in the world is named Matt.. this guy named Matt is not him.. however, I want to be his friend, he travels the world doing a jig and then tries to get other people to join him. It is super inspirational and it is great to see that no matter where you go, you will find people who like to be silly. Where The Hell Is Matt?

I have always wondered what it would be like to see what I look like doing something.. from the point of view of thing I am using... there are times where I look at myself in my webcam while typing. I look smart. This is what a hula hoop thinks of you..

Epbot is pretty neat! So is steampunk!

Fun amazing things to waste time on

Even though it is 8 AM I still like to see what is going on in the night sky. The Solar System Scope is a neat little tool that tells you where stuff is. Unfortunately, it is not real images but the digital rendering is pretty neat. Also the music on the site is very documentary like.

Carnies!

During my bus trips.. I have many things that I think about. What are sesame seeds and where do they come from?

The Etsy Blog, has a really interesting post about the cost of clothing and how disposable fashion came about.

TED Talk about expressing yourself with clothing found in thrift stores.

Sissy's Magical Ponycorn Adventure! Possibly the best video game I played this morning.

Really neat video about time travel and Hayden Panettiere!

The cats at DiggNation.. are going to try in a few weeks to remove a tattoo with poison oak/ivy

I want to be rich enough to have a REALLY ELABORATE HOME THEATER!

BUY THIS HAND HELD CAMERA/PRINTER!!!!

Buy this for me! Kickstarter perk is a flat back paper doll warrior mouse!

Liking the Canucks.. is contagious..

Tonight is Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Vancouver Canucks vs. Boston Bruins. I am not a sports fan.. however, it is impossible to do anything in Vancouver when the Canucks are playing. You can't go out to dinner.. because every place is either PACKED with people watching the game.. or they are closed.. because of the game. So, you go home.. and you try to watch some TV.. but every station has the game, or they interrupt the show you are watching with the score. Really, at this point.. you just watch the game because that is what you do.

I am currently blogging, the husband is watching the game and playing Knights of the Old Republic.. but the game.. it is on. I know that tonight.. I will not be able to go to bed until midnight. Because.. well.. the game. It is just how it is.

Here is todays interesting bits.

yay! Hyperbole and A Half is getting their own book!

Great pictures from my friend Kate... Zombies in Downtown Seattle!

Pop Culture revamp of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover! Featuring Divine, Laura Palmer,Kevin Smith, Frankenfurter and The Dude!

Great NPR article about Foreign Language Syndrome.. and this is actually a thing.. and not what happens after my husband watches a Sean Connery movie.
